The Activities Department staff work together as a team to make a difference in the lives of the residents at Maplewood. We are as diversified in personal goals and interests as the clients we serve. We love to blend our ideas to make fun things happen for Residents, their families, and friends, as well as our own staff. The Calendar of Events is printed weekly in the Keene Sentinel in the Senior News section. Special activity events are listed in the bi-monthly Maplewood Newsletter, which is mailed to residents, families, and interested parties. The Monthly Calendar is available on each of the nursing floors and is posted in each resident’s room. Copies are also available in Reception.
About Our Volunteers:
Maplewood Volunteers are a vital part of many of the programs we offer in the Activities Department. They lend an extra hand on trips, parties, barbecues, clothing sales, canteen, and so much more.
Maplewood volunteers assist residents on outings such as the Walpole Band concerts and hold animals for residents at the Friendly Farm in Dublin, NH. Even Bruce Fox, owner of the farm, looks forward to our annual trips. We have homemakers and former career women who run the monthly Clothing Center. A former Maplewood Nursing supervisor, who is invaluable with her many years of volunteer services, mends resident’s articles of clothing and other sewing projects at Maplewood. Our volunteers come from many different backgrounds.
Volunteers come from many area towns. Maplewood draws volunteers from towns such as Marlow, Gilsum, Harrisville, Winchester, Rindge, Walpole, Drewsville, as well as Westmoreland and Keene. We would love to have you join our family of volunteers and experience lots of joy, laughter and fun!
Maplewood Auxiliary Association:
Maplewood Auxiliary Association was created in 1990. This non-profit association was organized for the exclusive purpose of raising funds for projects that would benefit the residents of Maplewood. Click here to learn more about the Auxiliary.
As part of Maplewood’s Rehabilitation Services the Activities Department provides a warm and friendly environment, which motivates interaction and participation. Great care is taken to encourage, but not push, socialization where it could be rejected. Some residents like to just watch for a period of time before they are ready to join in on activities. Gradually, they are drawn into what they feel is a safe environment. No one can be sure when any one resident changes from merely observing the group to becoming an active and involved member.
Maplewood Activities offers discussion groups, crafts, reading groups, a book library, summer barbecues on the Patio, concerts, games, bus trips and special entertainment.
We also offer trips to local movie houses, area restaurants and band concerts. We have pets as visitors and pet in-house. There are popular games such as Bingo and Whist & Pitch card games. Other activities include picnics to area parks, cooking groups, walks, one-to-one visits plus much, much more!
Sensory programs stimulate the five senses in a structural but relaxed manner to help residents in the TLC Behavior Unit cope with sundowning, frustration, and at times, over stimulation with relaxing music, aroma therapy, and energy work. This is a wonderful group of residents who really respond to specialized one-to-one attention. It is very rewarding to the staff who work in this unit. Our Recreation Therapist Consultant, Joe Perron, has inspired canoe trips, horseback riding, camping, deep sea fishing, picturesque trips to Ashuelot Park. and bike-a-thon rides. The bikes (three wheelers), for the most part, have been donated. We have great pictures of these groups.
This group works seasonal and provides a positive gardening experience. Seeds are started in early spring. Gardens are planned, and planted mostly in raised beds to provide adapted gardening opportunities for the residents. Many staff, family and volunteers assist residents and many residents have their own raised garden beds to plant and care for. The residents just love this program!
Activities Department sponsored events include Apple Pie Festival, Summer Carnival, Weekly Music Programs, The Holiday Bazaar, Barbecues, Santa with Residents, National Nursing Home Week, Welcome Spring – pancakes at Stuart & John’s Pancake House in Westmoreland, NH, trips to the Friendly Farm in Dublin, NH and much, much more!
